After much anticipation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (“IRCC”) announced on December 31, 2018, that the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program would re-open in late January, rather than early January, as in previous years. The announcement came via IRCC’s official twitter page.
In August 2018, Canada’s Immigration Minister announced that the Government of Canada will be accepting up to 20,000 applications in 2019 for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents, in response to the continuous demand for parental and grandparental sponsorship. The Minister also announced that Immigration and Refugee Canada (IRCC) would be replacing the lottery system with a first-come, first-served based system once it reopens in 2019.
The Minister of Immigration also stated that the government will be making additional changes by simplifying the intake process, creating a more positive applicant experience.
For those interested in sponsoring a parent or grandparent in 2019, the Interest to Sponsor form will be available online. In order to sponsor a parent or grandparent, the form needs to be completed by eligible sponsors in order to notify IRCC of their interest to sponsor.
Rather than IRCC randomly selecting sponsors to apply, in 2019, the Canadian government will invite interested sponsors to submit an application to sponsor based on the order the forms are received, until 20,000 completed applications are received by IRCC.
The government plans to increase admission levels in the number of applications to 21,000 in 2020.
