June 5, 2017 - Express Entry awards additional points for siblings and French language skills

New changes to the Express Entry system will be coming into effect from tomorrow, June 6, 2017, including the allocation of points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). 

Express Entry is the system through which candidates for three different skilled immigration streams are sorted and selected, namely, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, and Federal Skilled Trades Program.

French Language Skills - extra points

As of June 6, 2017, Express Entry candidates with strong French language skills will be awarded additional CRS points, regardless of whether or not they also have completed a language test for English.

15 additional points will be awarded for test results of the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NLC) at level 7 in all four language skills in French (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and an English test result of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or lower.

A total of 30 additional points will be awarded for test results of the NLC at level 7 in all four skills in French and English test results of CLB 5 or higher.

Siblings in Canada - extra points

As of June 6, 2017, those Express Entry candidates with siblings in Canada will be awarded 15 extra points. Candidates must show that the sibling is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is living in Canada and is 18 years of age or older.

In order to qualify, the sibling in Canada must have a common mother or father with the principal Express Entry applicant, or their spouse or common law partner. The relationship with the sibling can be through blood, marriage, common-law partnership or adoption.

Job Bank Registration no longer mandatory

As of June 6, 2017, Express Entry candidates are not required to register for the Job Bank. Registration will become voluntary. 

Those individuals who meet the minimum entry criteria for Express Entry will be automatically placed into the pool and immediately eligible for invitation rounds. If they do not have a job in Canada at the time, and would like to start their job search, they can choose to register for the Job Bank.

Ranking candidates with a tie score

As of June 6, 2017, those candidates with the same CRS score (a CRS tie score), tied candidates will be ranked based on the date and time that their profile is submitted.
